- The Linda DeShields Outreach Center, 2814 Lancaster Avenue,
Wilmington
Are you concerned about the
HIV/AIDS epidemic in Delaware? Do you want to get an up close look at the
prevention effort going on in Wilmington? BCCS seeks volunteers
who would like to spend a few hours helping out in our Outreach Center.
Assemble supplies and HIV testing packets for
outreach workers. There are at least 8 different items that go into our safe sex
packets/kits, such as bleach kits given to injecting drug users to encourage
safer injection practice. This is a relaxing and zen-like activity.
Also, work in our clothes closet sorting donated
items by size and gender. Hang sorted clothes in the closet and help keep it
tidy and organized.
Hours are 9:00-12:00 weekdays. This is a one-time
or ongoing project. Individuals or groups of up to 4 are welcome.

INTERNSHIPS
- Various locations
Are you a student interested in hands-on
experience in the behavioral health treatment field? Are you enrolled in a degree
program in behavioral science, psychology, nursing, or a related field?
BCCS has internship opportunities that will give you the chance
to observe and participate in your area of interest:
-
Behavioral
Health Treatment: Brandywine’s treatment programs
address mental health and drug addiction directly, as well as their side effects, such as chronic illness, criminal activity, family issues, and
unemployment. We provide intervention and treatment through the use of
medication, therapy, education, and referral to self-help groups.
Responsibilities include: facilitating educational groups, crisis
intervention, assessment of a client's needs, strengths, and weaknesses,
treatment planning, case management, sitting in on psychological and psychiatric
assessments.
-
HIV
Prevention:
Brandywine’s Harm Reduction Outreach Program provides health
education and risk reduction activities for persons at risk for HIV infection.
Using an approach that reduces harm, we offer culturally sensitive,
non-judgmental services to address the health and social service needs of drug
users, sex workers, and their partners in the City of Wilmington. The Syringe
Exchange Program and Outreach Team provide the following free services:
anonymous syringe exchange, HIV counseling and testing, overdose prevention
counseling, information and materials related to reducing risk, and referrals to
health care and social services. Responsibilities include:
community outreach, distribution of HIV risk-reduction supplies, overdose
prevention, data management and reporting, group education, and other projects
as developed by the intern and supervising staff.
-
Communications:
BCCS wants to connect with our supporters in the community,
inspire them with our stories, and partner with them to invest their money,
time, or expertise in a cause we both support. Development/Communications staff
does this through multiple media including our print newsletter, speaking
engagements, Web site, blog, video, and social networking sites. We work closely
with staff and clients to collect stories, and use them in creative ways to
inspire and inform. Responsibilities include: writing guest
posts for the BCCS Blog, identifying and writing success stories, using Web 2.0
tools such as video and social networking, and crafting a strategic
communications plan.
Candidates will be selected based on resume and
interview.
