Where the Journey to Recovery BeginsAbout Us

Mission and History

Brandywine Counseling, Inc. (BCI) is a substance abuse treatment agency that provides counseling and related assistance to addicted persons and their families for chemical addiction and related problems.

Originally part of Wilmington Medical Center, BCI was incorporated as a separate non-profit in 1985. Today we are Delaware’s largest provider of outpatient addiction services. Our operations meet strict federal and state health care guidelines. We have been a full member United Way agency since 1988.

Size and Scope

  • Nearly 2,000 Delaware residents age 18 or over are enrolled in a BCI treatment program. We also provide outreach and education to thousands more individuals each year who are not active in treatment.

  • We currently have seven sites throughout the state of Delaware.

  • Our staff of 150 includes certified alcohol and drug counselors, registered and licensed practical nurses, psychologists, and physicians who work closely with clients and their families.

  • Our annual budget is over $8 million. Most of our revenue comes from government contracts. Our major funders include the Delaware Division of Health and Social Services; the U.S. Substance Abuse and Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment; and Medicaid.

Philosophy of Treatment Philosophy

BCI believes substance abuse is a progressive primary disease that arrests the development and growth of individuals, contributes to economic decline, and impairs one’s ability to function as a member of a family and society. All of our programs reflect a holistic model that addresses an individual’s thinking, behavior, and lifestyle to prevent relapse. We treat the client’s addiction directly, but also the side effects of addiction, such as criminal activity, family violence, child neglect and abuse, infant mortality, and poverty.

Personal growth is a difficult task requiring continued awareness and support from the patient’s family and/or significant others. BCI’s programs provide intervention and treatment through the use of medication, counseling, education, and referral to self-help groups. Appropriate aftercare referrals provide continuing support for the client’s recovery.

Since 2003, BCI has worked to improve patient access to and retention in treatment as part of the nationwide Network for Improvement of Addiction Treatment (NIATx) project. We have done this by identifying and improving flawed processes, and without additional costs or staff.

Recent Accomplishments

  • Implemented Delaware's first needle exchange program, with over 2,700 syringes exchanged and 79 clients referred to treatment in the first year.

  • Earned Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval following unannounced audit, due to our complete records, outcomes monitoring, clients' comments, and innovative ideas for the future.

  • Expanded dispensing hours to late afternoon for 86 patients with at least 12 months of clean time, providing relief from morning crowds.
