Where the Journey to Recovery BeginsAbout Us

Mission and History

Brandywine Counseling & Community Services, Inc. (BCCS) is a community organization that provides holistic care to persons and their families living with addiction, mental health, and HIV-related challenges.

Brandywine Counseling saves lives. We help people recover from addiction and mental illness, and reduce their HIV risk. Each life saved touches other lives, families, and communities in the Delaware region.

Originally part of Wilmington Medical Center, BCCS was incorporated as a separate non-profit in 1985. Today we provide a wide range of behavioral health and community services. We have been a full member United Way agency since 1988.

Size and Scope

  • Over 2,000 Delaware residents age 18 or over are enrolled in a BCCS treatment program. We also reach thousands more individuals a year through our outreach and education programs.

  • We currently have seven sites throughout the state of Delaware.

  • Our staff of 150 works closely with clients and their families. They are certified alcohol and drug counselors, licensed mental health practitioners, dual diagnosis counselors (CCDP), registered and licensed practical nurses, psychologists, and physicians.

  • Our annual budget is over $8 million. Most of our revenue comes from government contracts. Our major funders include the Delaware Division of Health and Social Services; the U.S. Substance Abuse and Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment; and Medicaid.

Philosophy of Treatment Philosophy

We treat addiction and mental illness directly, but also their side effects, such as criminal activity, family violence, child neglect and abuse, infant mortality, poverty, and HIV/AIDS. Our programs provide intervention and treatment through the use of medication, counseling, education, and referral to self-help groups. Appropriate aftercare referrals provide continuing support for recovery.

Since 2003, BCCS has worked to improve patient access to and retention in treatment as part of the nationwide Network for Improvement of Addiction Treatment (NIATx) project. We have done this by identifying and improving flawed processes, and without additional costs or staff.

Recent Accomplishments

  • The Delaware Needle Exchange has exchanged over 28,000 syringes, enrolled over 650 participants, and identified 14 HIV positives in nearly three years of operation.

  • 449 methadone patients (40%) have at least 90 days of abstinence.

  • The Alpha outpatient program discharged 44% of patients successfully or with some goals completed in 2009.

  • Intensive Outpatient Services were introduced in 2009 at Lancaster, Alpha, and Lighthouse to offer a higher level of care to individuals not succeeding in the traditional program.

  • The Newark Center saw a 25% increase in the number of patients remaining in treatment for one year or more in 2009.
